Prison Fellowship partners with local churches across the country to minister to a group that society often scorns and neglects: prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their families. God, unlike the world, has always chosen to identify closest with those who are isolated and broken. “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison, and you came to visit me . . . I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:35-36, 40).

After talks with the prison director in Sarpsborg, PF has got the permission to establish a similar visitor service in Sarpsborg – and possibly in the whole region. The upcoming training is scheduled for March 12.

Norwegian prison visitor, Odd Olsen, once asked God to put him in prison so he could witness to the inmates. The business man and horse dealer's prayer was answered. Inmates in Sarpsborg Prison have been really blessed in visits, prayers and ministry. The newspaper gave Odd Olsen two full pages with pictures.

The newspaper, ”Demokraten” in Fredrikstad , followed this up with the same article. Aat the next Alpha course in the prison on Saturday, Odd Olsen and his group of faithful prison visitors, were sent two very large Norwegian cream cakes to serve the inmates at their Alpha party. 2500 – 3000 brand new beds and mattresses have been donated by Switzerland. They are easy to transport. This generous gift can be channeled via PF's local networks which serve prisons. Transportation is administered by PFI's European office in Switzerland. The beds can be used by prisons, or hospitals in Eastern Europe, Asia and/or Africa. Is there anyone who could contribute to transportation costs? More info.

Some of you have already donated money which has been sent on. We now learn that his wife and a child she is breast-feeding have tuberculosis. In addition to everything else, money is needed for medicines for these two. Tim will probably be spending another year here in Norway. Here is a short overview of Alpa in Norwegian prisons
Total prisons in Norway: 44
Alpha held once or more in the following prisons: Sarpsborg (since 97), Arendal (since 98), Ringerike (since 98), Ullersmo (since 2001), Bodø, Fredrikstad, Ila (since 99), and Hassel. Most of the activities have been organized by PF Norway. Ingvald Viken, PF Norway chairman; has been asked by Alpha Norway to coordinate the Alpha activites in the Norwegian prisons since 2001. A manual, giving instructions how to run an Alpha couse in prison, has been worked out by Ingvald Viken and distributed to groups wanting to start.
In one Alpha conference run by Alpha Norway, Arne Eide of PF Norway, who has been responsible for running 11 Alpha courses in Ringerike prison, has led a session about how to get started with Alpha course in prison.
There are plans to start up Alpha in more prisons in 2005. First out will probably be Kongsvinger Prison, Drammen Prison, and Stavanger Prison.
